Durango Historic Train Thins Forest to Reduce Fire Risk

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is teaming up with Fire Ready to reduce wildfire risk along the railroad tracks. Fuels mitigation work includes tree thinning and brush removal. Vegetation is landscaped into isolated pockets. Thinning work will improve scenic views, as well as reduce wildfire risk.

According to railroad officials, most cinders land within twenty-five feet of the track. If a cinder does start a fire in mitigated areas, the chances of a large-acreage wildfire are severely reduced. Work for the remainder of this season will focus in the highest risk areas of Cascade Wye and Hermosa Hill. Fire Ready uses hand crews to minimize impacts to the land.

Fire Ready provides wildfire resistant landscaping, including creating defensible space, tree thinning, brush removal, and chipping services. Franchise opportunities are available statewide. Visit www.fireready.net or call 970-533-7078 for more information.
